The Relationship Between Parental Criticism and Parental Expectations

parental expectations had a way bigger impact not their criticism necessarily like obviously their criticism did but it was more what you as a young person thought your parents expected of you that made you drive for perfectionism. Young people internalize these expectations and depend on them for their self-esteem so when your parents don't necessarily teach you that their expectations it's okay to be below or you know it'sOkay to fail sometimes which is inevitable if you're just living up to their expectations um you're much more likely to be critical of yourself for not matching that.
