Python Stats Models - Is NumPy Compilable?

One of my favorite libraries that's out there, and this makes me a super nerd, at least for Python libraries, is stats models. It's not that the APIs are exceptionally designed or anything. They are very good. But when you dig into the source code, you start seeing that everything is referring to compiled libraries. There's another library that's just like that. NumPy is this shiny Python veneer over a absolute metric crap ton of C code.
