Knowing your audience means tuning what you say or write to provide as much information as your audience needs but no more. One type of study that's become pretty well known I've written about it and Natalie Wechsler also wrote about it in her book is commonly known as the baseball study. So those are sort of what pretty high level theory, like okay I'm probably reading is going to be really dependent on background knowledge.
