Why Is Chevron Adopting a Scope 3 Emissions Cap?

A Scope 3 emissions cap demands that this oil company take responsibility for reducing not just its own emissions, but even the emissions of its customers. Caterpillar, a company that buys fuel from companies like Chevron to power its machines and its forklifts and its backloaders, does not have a Scope 3 emissions reduction plan. That makes about as much business sense as McDonald's voluntarily committing to reducing the body weight of anyone who eats a Big Mac without asking the customer to share in that responsibility at all in return.
