This architecture is suitable for some things that conventional chemical rockets, or even solar electric propulsion is unsuitable for. I think it's going to be the ultimate expression of this type of technology using directed energy. We could use this to intercept interstellar objects passing through the solar system. That actually might be the fastest propulsion technology that could ever exist.
