What Is a Met Minute?

One met is defined as the amount of energy that you are expending when you are sitting at rest doing nothing. This can be multiplied based on the energy demands of an activity. So in other words, five met times 20 minutes can give you 100 met minutes of total energy expenditure. 500 to 1000 met minutes of activity per week is typically recommended in the physical activity guidelines.
