There are some bad bosses out there that wouldn't be super happy to hear that 100 yep and you know that is something that is concerning sometimes for applicants. Most applications either will have sort of a field directly in the application where you can sort of address for choice of recommenders or there's also an optional essay that you can write about why you didn't use your direct supervisor.
