The most shocking things that we're going to talk to students about are the things that need context before you just throw them at them in front of the classroom. The other things that i find newer teachers do, i call it a shock and awe kind of teaching. I'm thinking of beginning a unit on jim crow with a graphic lynching image that you haven't prepared students for. And so i respect the intention, but wed need to make sure we know what learning looks like.
