Brahms's original first movement is practically a different piece. It's 20% longer and much more diffuse. In the second movement, Brahms makes all the right decisions by making almost no revisions at all. He must have been tickled with the genius of his youthful creation because he almost didn't touch it. The second movement is a scared soul, allowing us to dance away the emotions of the first movement.
