How Did You Get Into the Foreign Service?

I just got super involved as a little kid in social sciences, history, geography. And then just kept that interest up all the way through undergraduate and graduate school. When I was in graduate school, my major professor asked me if I wanted to take the Foreign Service test. He said he thought you I think he'd make a really good Foreign Service officer. Then right after that, right on the heels of that great news, I got a letter saying we're not hiring anybody this year. So they weren't taking in any junior Foreign Service officers.
