Chess in the Cold War
Chess was already popular in nineteenth century czarist russia. But it was after the communist revolution of 19 17 that the game really exploded. Chess playing institutions became developed and supported by the state. The all union workers competition attracted tens of thousands of players from all across soviet society. It began in 19 24 and happened every year for the next five decades. In 19 25, a government awarded a prize of 30 thousand roubles for the world's first state sponsored chess tournament which was held in moscow. International champions were invited to compete.
