Aristotle reckoned every living thing had a soul. He meant an animating principle, the thing that gave each life form its particular living characteristics. Plants have a vegetative soul, which can't reason or perceive,. But it still has powers of nutrition, growth and even reproduction. In the late 18 hundreds, back in the day when people were still routinely reading aristotle, they started to cribe comotos patients as vegetative.
