In the early 80s, a decision came down where they said, well, if humans manipulate the genetic code, then that thing that is manipulated actually can be patented. So now for what kind of things can you create these rights, right? And who gets to choose again is the big question. It's interesting because in principle, even the US Supreme Court and most statutes around the world would have excluded something of basic laws of nature from patentability. The story I'm telling is about patenting the sequence of the BRACA gene - responsible for a very aggressive form of breast cancer.
