The Role of Place Cells in Memory

John O'Keefe was awarded the Nobel Prize for his work on spatial memory. He discovered that a tiny part of the brain, called the hippocampus, is involved in our spatial awareness. When he looked at cells responding when an animal went to one part of the room and not another, he realized it could be used as a mat.
