The History of London

Charles II gave his blessing to all these developments with his patronage of the Royal Society. Isaac Newton had just invented gravity, which meant that everyone stopped floating around in the air and could actually walk normally on the streets again. The population of London at this point was around 400,000 making it by far the largest conurbation in the country. Living conditions obviously very cramped inside the city walls, lanes and alleys were very narrow.
