Is There a Republic in Britain?
It was the most amazingly radical thing that happened much beyond the expectation of anybody involved in the Civil War by a handful of key players. It would have surprised absolutely everybody if you told them here before that there was going to be a republic a year later. In terms of comparators it was obviously long before the French Revolution or other revolutions that we might think of across Europe so the most places were monarchies but not all places as you say Venice have been a long tradition of republicanismEverybody's history was classical history so everybody knew about the Roman Republic this was a famous touch point and also more specifically in what we would now call the Dutch Republic.
