Who decides what constitutes a mental disorder or disability in the first place? This is what sociologist judy singer was getting at when she argued that autism was socially constructed. Someone with ad h d might be considered to have a disorder in 20 first century america or great britain, but their ad h d characteristics may have been seen as advantageous in a hunter gatherers society. Or in the age of exploration, i wouldn't be surprised if a large majority of explorers, adventurers and innovators throughout history had h d. Even if we stay in our current times, a disability in one community might be considered an ability in another.
