In 16 forty one a puritan minister named nathaniel wart, drafted and proposed the massachusetts body of liberties. It was te first ever recorded protection of free speech in the american colonies. At the time, free peech was a distinctly american concept. And while folks like virginia's governor william berkeley prayed that free speech and press would never come to america's shores, it was slowly beginning to take root.
