Water and Comets Contribute to the Composition of the Earth

A major reservoir of volatiles in the solar system is is comets. A fred whipple called them dirty balls. And so they are violable candidates for being contributors to the composition of the earth. But as you noted, they have oxygen and we can compare its isotopic content to what we know the earth. The view is that while comets probably did make contribution, but probably not more than about ten percent of the water came from comets ad.
