The Best Evidence We Have That the USSR Shouldn't Enter the Pacific War

The U.S. knew there were two ways to force the Japanese to surrender without using atomic bombs, he says. The first was to let them know they can keep the emperor, which we did after the war, as MacArthur Southwest Pacific Command reports in July of 1945. We knew that was the first step. The second step was to wait for the Soviet invasion. Because the US intelligence was saying that the Soviet invasion would end the war, they would convince the Japanese that not fighting on was completely futile.
