I think the free will skeptical position is often really quite misunderstood. Even if we think that some choices are deliberate, it's not all that obvious that this makes it okay to consider their suffering and intrinsic good when they do something wrong. So I think how we get from conclusions about certain kinds of abilities or freedom people have to conclusions about retributive practices being justifiable is often not very clearly spelled out.
