Death and Life After Death and Reincarnation

i'm curious to know what your thoughts are about how can the soul exist after death, yet also be reincarnated. The tibetan book of the dead addresses the forty nine day period between death and reincarnation. Even in christian scripture, there is an intermediate period betweendeath and resurrection.
