Shaftesbury was known as being kind of a religious sceptic. He doesn't want to be a constructivist. He wants to say, beauty is absolutely objective. And so how do you do that? You can't just talk about it as hume does in terms of mental faculties. By the time we get to hume, that whole element is gone. That's why they are both, in their own way, confirmation of and also obvious natural reflections.
