The Structure of Cell Membranes

To understand how neurotransmitters work, we need to know a little bit about the structure of cell membranes. The cell membrane is the essential barrier between inside the cell and the outside world. There are only a very few, very small molecules that can just go through the membrane by simple diffusion. Modern neuropharmacology is trying to target specific receptors rather than trying to block or mimic the neurotransmitters.
