The Third Crusade Is a Success, You Might Say
In 12 o two, the pope and his allies call for another crusade with the hope of retaking jerusalem via egypt. The leaders of the crusade have very high hopes that they will gather tens of thousands of men. But only a fraction of the men and money that they expected ever shows up. So they basically owe a tremendous debt to the city of venice. In this way, the third crusade is a sort of successful failure, you might say. It does not achieve the great goal of recapturing jer Jerusalem, but it does a make significant progress in soring up the crusaders power in the middle east.
