The History of the Langley Engine
Wilbur and Charlie Wright flew the Kitty Hawk in 1903. The plane was mostly prefabbed, but Wilbur decided to buy some lumber along the way. They couldn't find an engine that would give them what they wanted for a reasonable price so they built their own. It developed about 12 and a half horsepower when it was up and running. When you look at the 1903 airplane, you see this thing that looks like a radiator. It's actually just a standpipe.
