Pine Valley in Minnesota is known for its steep, rocky trails. When the author's youngest child was diagnosed with a life-threatening heart condition, she took her own shambling steps up the side of an esker. "I lifted the lid on my depthless sorrow in a place wide enough to encompass it and I survived," she says.
