Some of the students involved were ideologues who genuinely believed in one faction or another, but others were not. The son of a Yakuza boss ended up following the family business for a time before going to college. In his autobiography, Miyazaki Manabu talked less about ideology as a driver of this and more about image. He was attracted to the quote, awesome resolve of an organization prepared to use illegal means to accomplish its goal of overturning society.
