The Mona Lisa: A Portrait of a Noble Woman From Florence

The Mona Lisa was stolen from the Louvre in Paris on August 21, 1911. The painting is of a noble woman from Florence named Lisa Giacondo. Leonardo worked on the painting for years and took it with him when he went to work in King Francis I's court. In November 1913, an art dealer in Florence received a letter from a man called Leonard who claimed to have the Mona Lisa in his possession. It had been in France since the death of Da Vinci but has remained there ever since.
