What Is Clerical?

In the twentieth century, modern art was e lord of it was bought up by offices. People who work in offices are often referred to as clerical workers. The word clerical can be traced tro the eleventh century. It literally means a priest, scholar or a student. That's what a cleric is. So i'm thinking, how the folk why? Why?
