Kelly's Life Changed After She Met Stephen Gaines
Sophie Naphtalin is using the inquest process to create a legal link between domestic abuse and suicide. In August 2017, following a night of arguments, Kelly took the actions that would end her life. Stephen Gayne was charged with coercive control and two counts of assault. The judge explicitly said that his abuse had driven Kelly to her death. But the trial itself was about his abuse of Kelly before she died, not about how she died.
