Biochar production is an indigenous practice that farmers in the amazon have been doing for thousands of years. It's a very cheap way to increase the nutrient holding capacity of the soil. And as i started digging in deeper, i learned that it was also being investigated as a carbon sequestration tool. I got a grant from the billan lindigates foundation to test small scale biotre production with small holder farmers in east afric and these were farmers mainly growing corn and sugar cane. We got tremendous results by producing biochar from residues that they were generating in field, and combining it with either the chemical fertilizers they were already using or organic alternatives.
