Rachmananov's Second Theme of the First Movement
At the end of what we think is the exposition in a traditional sonata form movement, Rachmananov will go on to one of his most inspired detours. This music is simply the opening of the 3rd movement in a major key, hidden away by all the pirouettes and leaps of the pianist. All the virtuosity hides yet another illusion, this time to the second theme of the first movement. No simple illusions now, no subtle shadings hiding the real theme in the background. It's now just presented as is a nostalgic reminder of the past.
