The wig was so associated with royals in the 16th and 17th century. It's very much a marker of status, but it comes across great in paintings that are then going to be the basis for prints. Even women who aren't wearing wigs will want their hair to look like a wig because they are imitating or relating to their monarch. And you see that with men in wigs as well.
