The Importance of Israel in the Middle East

Israel is an outlier in the Middle East. It's maybe the only non-Muslim nation there today. Israel has survived lots of lots of very hairy situations, multiple wars. But it would not have survived without the support of the United States. So you could consider Israel to be essentially in some ways a proxy of the US in the region.
