The Bachelor Mess of James Buchanan

In 1821 Buchanan is elected for the first time to the US Congress. He lived with southern democratic representatives who switched his politics towards a more southern oriented pro-slavery direction. As a federalist republican, half and half, he attempted to play kingmaker in the first presidential election where Andrew Jackson was up for election. And ended up allying himself fully with genocidal Jacksonianism but Jackson would never forgive him.
