The Ugly Culture of America
The survival of America as a small-L liberal nation requires us to reject that idea. It should be obvious, I would hope, but the fact that I might not like a person does not give me uncircumscribed license to demand their prosecution in cases D or E or F. The clearest sign of a healthy small L liberal society is the ability of the citizenry to distinguish between the man and the idea. As a culture, we should cherish a system that requires all accused people to be tried on the specific facts of the case within laws that are limited in scope. That should be our inverse North Star.
