The lennox challenge has taught me anything, it's the users who aren't familiar with the type of errors that a particular platform spits out. Installing steam through a package manager isn't like a superadvanced action there. There should be no expectation there, if your user experience isn't complete trash, that it's going to like, destroy your ui. The number of people that are still kind of writing that is glad to mind blowing. I think that it could be as simple as ample, just putting road blocks in place, that go, you know, don't do this.
