"I was trying to think like, is the story about these two young men named Michael, Michael Johnson and Michael Brown," she says. "And then when COVID came, I realized that I was going to be writing about HIV and COVID together." The first person in her outer social circle to die of COVID was Lorena Borjas, who was called the mother of the Trans Latinx community here in New York City's Queens. She had dealt with police violence her whole life but also worked for migrant communities.
