The perverse incentive structure of the climate commons belongs to that mind bending branch of math known as game theory. Game theory challenges our intuitions about what is rational, or even whether rational is always a good thing. And so it applies paradoxes and all to rational agents we make ourselves, like driverless cars. You want to create systems that are mostly capable of co operation and getting along with others. But i think there are times when actually it can end up being a little bit of a self fulfilling prophecy.
