Apple's first attempt at this was something called Siri eyes free. And basically you would have your phone either plugged into your car or connected via Bluetooth. You could use the steering wheel controls to activate Siri and it would tell your car, Hey, call David. It would pass that through Siri, through the cable, through Bluetooth or whatever, to the phone and then make the call through the car stereo.
