Not all learners learn alike, that experts and novices learn differently. Expert learns by chunking it; novice pays attention to the fundamental details. Search is one of the most taxing on working memory things we can do. If you don't know what you're looking for, all you will do won't be to look and figure it out. And i think part of the challenge of coaching people who are not experts is adapting the coaching environment to the level of experts or novices.
