The Anthropocentric Conceit of Artificial Intelligence
The idea of artificial intelligence is an anthropocentric conceit that human-like intelligence is both something desirable and something we should strive to emulate in some kind of synthetic form. It's hard to extricate our human impulses, our desire to want to play God and replicate ourselves in other forms from what we're doing technologically. So like you, I think I would take a broader view of the kinds of technologies that are sandwiched in that term.
