The tonic pool of dopamine is what's primarily regulated by methylation through the enzyme catechol o-methyltransferase or COMT. The higher your COMT activity, the lower the tonicPool of dopamine. But if the tonic Pool of dopamine is lessened, then that means that the phasic pulses of dopamine look bigger to the brain. By contrast, if you have lowCOMT activity, low methylation of dopamine, you have a greater tonicpool of dopamine.
