Ibn Khaldun was an acute observer of the Islamic world. He connected the rise and fall of dynasties to Islamic beliefs in their Messianic figure, the Mādi. Machiavelli credits Numa following Livy with the formation of Roman religion. But he has this very interesting discussion of what we might call Numa's pious fraud.
