Jeremy Bentham, John Stuart Mill and today Peter Singer have all taken a utilitarian approach to animal rights. But Wise argues that this is wrong because animals are not just genetically programmed to a certain life. Animals want many things, not just freedom from pain - they want society of other animals,. They want free space to move around here. There's so many things that they want. And it's not the case that these are all reducible to pain. Some animals who have grown up in zoos don't actually feel pain when they're denied company... Nonetheless, it is the deprivation.
