When W.F. Kirby announced his intention to produce an English version of the Calvula from a German translation, there was an outcry. As you're writing about the folklore archives in Finland, the folklore society at the time wailed, plaintively, we must all learn Finnish! I think the point is that the investigation into folklore even before that's what we called it, was also not national. A lot of the confusion around the word folk comes from its borrowing from the German folk which doesn't quite mean what the English was intended to mean.
