The Importance of Artemology in Painting

There's a sort of sad, very, but very charming story in the book about, um, Edward Byrne Jones' experience with mummy brown. That story is particularly lovely for its fusion of artemology and etymology. And it kind of goes to the heart of that, of that realization that you really can't just, um, divorce yourself completely from the materiality of the pigments you're working with.
