An individual supernova going off can change the future of a galaxy. Beatrice Tinsley was one of the first people to try and simulate a galaxy on a computer in the late 1960s. Her work had a profound effect on all of cosmology, because you can't think of galaxies as passive things that just sit there kind of being boring lights for the universe as a whole. Quite esoteric concerns about how a galaxy evolves changes the fate of the entire universe.
