The Importance of Memory
St. Augustine says that only the present really exists, and even if God knows what's going to happen absolutely, he knows it because he's observing it happen. The things that exist in our memory are in some sense constructed into what they are through that process of remembering. And as they take on meaning for us, they begin to become most fully themselves.
